Unreal Engine Changed How I Make Music Videos

Two years ago, a music video meant green screen, hours of roto, and hoping the lighting match would hold up in the final grade. Now I show up to set with a laptop running Unreal Engine and the artist can see their virtual world in real-time.

The Shift

Virtual production isn't new — The Mandalorian made LED volumes mainstream in 2019. But the tech has trickled down. You don't need a 40-foot LED wall to benefit from real-time rendering.

For music videos, I use Unreal in two ways:

Pre-vis on set. Even without a volume, I can composite the artist into the CG environment in real-time through a monitor feed. The director sees the final look while shooting. No more "trust me, it'll look great in post."

Final pixel rendering. Unreal's path tracer is now good enough for final delivery on many projects. A shot that would take 45 minutes per frame in a traditional renderer finishes in seconds. For a 4-minute music video with 50+ VFX shots, that's the difference between a 2-week render and overnight.

The Tradeoff

Real-time rendering is fast, not free. Building Unreal environments takes time. Material authoring, lighting, optimization — the work shifts from post to pre-production. For one-off hero shots, traditional pipelines are still faster. For projects with dozens of shots in the same environment, Unreal saves weeks.

My Setup

Unreal Engine 5, MetaHuman for digital doubles, Quixel Megascans for environments, custom Niagara particle systems for stylized FX. Final comp still goes through Nuke for the last 10% — grain, lens effects, final color.

The artists I work with don't care about the pipeline. They care about the result. And right now, Unreal lets me deliver results that would've been a feature film budget five years ago.
